We are talking about who are legitimate sons and daughters in God’s family.

Ephesians 5:21 “Submit to one another in the fear of Christ.”
Hebrews 12:8-10 If you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. We had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? They disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.
What if you don’t submit to Jesus’ discipline? If you don’t let a father discipline you then he isn’t really functioning as a father. If you don’t let God the Father discipline you then He isn’t your Father. You become an illegitimate son or daughter. If your hand offends you cut it off. If your hand never did what you told it to do, it would not only irritate you, you’d eventually find a way to subdue it or get rid of it.
Why is God better at discipline than our parents? Parents discipline us for only a short time. Parents do what seems best to them, but not necessarily good for us. God disciplines us for our own good. God wants us to share in God’s holiness. He wants us to be holy like Him.
Prayer coaching: “Jesus help me obey you and be your legitimate son or daughter. Jesus I give you permission to discipline me for my own good. I want to share in Your holiness. Make me holy.”
