John 5:17-18 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.” For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
Well, you guessed it. The authorities ignored the miracle that everyone was talking about. They wanted to legally kill Jesus, because He called God His own Father.
They knew what that meant. Jesus made Himself equal with God the Father. How could Jesus be God? The law was clear that they had a legal right to put Him to death for claiming this.
